Hydroponics

Our plants grow in a hydroponic system. This means without soil. Water is pumped with a solar water pump from a tank trough pipes where the plants are and then flows back into the tank. This is a closed cycle where no water is wasted.

The advantage of hydroponics especialy in Kiribati is that it makes best use of water and it is environmentaly safe as it is a closed system.

The disadvantage of Hydroponics however is that it needs more monitoring than soil based gardens. While a plant growing in soil can survive a while without watering as it is drawing moisture from around its roots from the soil, plants in pipes dont have that buffer and will die within hours of a break down of the water pump.
We use small computers which control and monitor the water flow in the pipes and set of an alarm if there is now water in the pipes.
